I'm attracted to the idea that urban areas should be turned into farmland in light of the brand-new technology of plant factories, but I still can't support the idea unless economic problems are solved.
First, the new technology of plant farms is under development, where crops are produced under LEDs and in water. It can overcome issues endemic to urban areas, such as blocked sunlight by buildings.
However, there remain many economic problems to overcome. The cost of land in urban areas is so expensive that the investment might never be recouped. Plant farms require more electricity and labor than conventional farming. Products from plant farms are likely to be uncompetitive in the market.
On these grounds, I still cannot support the idea that the government should encourage vacant land to be used for farming. Someday, if products from plant farms become competitive in the market, I will change my mind.
